Where NOT to Use Stamped Concrete
- High freeze-thaw climates (USDA Zones 1–5): Repeated freezing causes sealer to fail and surface to spall. Pavers are much better in these climates.
- High-traffic driveways: Vehicle tyres wear the surface sealer quickly. Plain broom finish is more durable for driveways.
- Sloped areas: Deep stamped pattern grooves can be slippery when wet on slopes. Use brushed or exposed aggregate for sloped driveways or pool surrounds.
Stamped Concrete FAQ
Stamped concrete costs $8–$18/sqft for standard single-colour patterns (ashlar slate, cobblestone). Complex multi-colour designs run $15–$30/sqft. For comparison, plain broom-finish concrete costs $4–$8/sqft. The premium pays for: stamp tool rental ($200–$500/day), release agent, colour hardener or integral colour, more skilled labour (timing is critical), and sealing. A 20×20 patio stamped in a standard pattern costs $3,200–$7,200 vs $1,600–$3,200 for plain concrete.
